The 4 Levels of Furniture Restoration: Flip, Clean, Fix or Restore?
This is the thing nobody explains: “restoring” isn't one activity — it's four, and they need completely different amounts of time, skill and investment. Before you buy anything, decide which one you're looking at.
The Four Levels

Watch out: beginners assume everything is Level 4. So they buy a Level 4 piece as their first, apply beginner effort and beginner tools, and drown. Start at Level 1 and 2 and work up.
The Fifth Option: Don't Do the Work
Sometimes the right call is to sell it as it is. I recently found a set of chairs for a customer who wanted to reupholster them herself. I cleaned them and passed them straight on. More work would have removed her choice and eaten my margin. More work does not always mean more value — ask yourself: does this work actually add money, or am I just doing it because I assume I should?
