Tool Drop: the $160 dust setup that changed my workshop

People often ask how much gear they need to get started. If it's a hobby, or you're only planning to do one or two pieces, the honest answer is: not much. Borrow, rent, or spend a little. This is the setup I actually use. It's not the best on the market and I'm not saying you need it, but it works, and I want to be upfront about what it cost. The problem: I work in a fairly enclosed space, and I'll admit I'm lazy about cleaning up. For months I let the dust build up, until my clothes were filthy, my nose was always full, and I'd had enough. Sanding dust from old finishes and sandpaper ends up in your lungs, nose and eyes, and that's not something to shrug off. The pro option: Surfprep is the system most people in this space seem to use, at around $700 USD. That's not crazy money, but it's a real investment when you're on your first project or just starting out. What I did instead: The sander. A standard Black & Decker orbital sander, about $47 NZD. It's the right size for my hands, not too heavy and not too noisy. The vac. A Stanley FatMax 1250W 19L wet and dry vacuum. I paid $109 NZD; they usually sit somewhere between $100 and $125. The connection. The sander's dust port has a little rubber O-ring, and it turns out the vac's hose fits it almost perfectly. The O-ring gives you a decent seal. I cut off the two small clips that were meant to lock the dust bag on, and now the hose rarely comes off. The paper. Make sure your sanding discs have holes, and line them up with the holes in the sander pad. That's what lets the vac pull dust straight through. The result: about $160 all in, and a huge reduction in dust. It's a genuine game changer. I've used it on oak, where old varnish breaks down and usually goes everywhere, and it copes well. It also means less cleanup and better protection for the finished pieces further into the gallery. The downsides: the vac is a bit noisy, and the hose isn't quite long or flexible enough. That's about it. On the plus side it's light, easy to empty and store, wheels around, and being wet and dry it's handy for spills at home too. Don't go too cheap. I burned out the motor on an $80 vac from another brand because I used it so much. Spending a little more got me something bigger and tougher. You'll find plenty of battery-powered extractors out there, and they're probably useful, but they quickly get into the hundreds. If you're planning to sand more than one piece, this $150 to $160 setup is the one I'd recommend to any beginner. These are just the brands I like and can get hold of in New Zealand.
